King Kong vs. Godzilla Sequel

Godzilla vs. Kong had a rocky development, first scheduled for release on May 29, 2020, then being moved back to March 13, 2020, only to be postponed again to November 20, 2020, and finally May 21, 2021. It was then rescheduled for March 26, 2021, before being released in cinemas in the United States on March 31, 2021. Through April 30, 2021, the film was also streaming simultaneously on HBO Max.
The film is directed by Adam Wingard and produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers, with script by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein based on a story by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. King of the Monsters was also written by Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields. Godzilla vs. Kong picks up five years after King of the Monsters, with Godzilla and Kong engaged in a gigantic fight in the aftermath of Ghidorah's rampage.
In 2024, five years after Godzilla killed his extraterrestrial opponent Ghidorah, Godzilla and Kong are the only living Titans on Earth. A storm caused by Ghidorah, combined with the storm cell that surrounds Skull Island, has made its climate unstable, forcing Monarch to confine Kong inside a dome-shaped facility that simulates the island's environment, with an orphaned young Iwi girl named Jia who is deaf and can communicate with Kong via sign language.
However, just as he is about to finish downloading the data, Godzilla comes and attacks in an unexpected manner. One of the oddest pieces of equipment found at the site, which resembled a massive robotic eye, is among the ruins.
Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons teams up with former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist Nathan Lind as they search for a powerful energy source. As Nathan's brother tried to investigate the Hollow Earth, he was murdered by a tremendous anti-gravity field inside the tube. Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, which are modified ships that can endure the gravity field's pressure, according to Walter.
Because Skull Island can no longer hold him (because Kong has grown too enormous), Nathan proposes using Kong as their navigator to bring them to the energy source. In the end, Ilene agrees to help halt Godzilla's rampage and locate Kong a new home when Nathan persuades her.
Titan attacks the army and caps the barge, just avoiding drowning Kong and the other passengers. Ultimately, Nathan manages to save the passengers by loosening Kong's chains and allowing him to swim to the surface and flip the barge, freeing him from his captor's grasp. On a nearby aircraft ship, Godzilla joins Kong in combat. Fighter planes must divert Godzilla long enough so that Kong can force him back into the ocean. Godzilla snatches Kong by the tail and drags him into the ocean, where he intends to drown him in an attempt to evade the atomic bomb.
Nathan sees no other alternative and determines that the gang should turn down all of the ships' engines to fool Godzilla into believing he destroyed them and Kong was vanquished, which they do. Godzilla looks at the shattered fleet with interest and then swims away, knowing he has triumphed. After realizing that reactivating the ships could allow Godzilla to return, the group decides to fly Kong to a Hollow Earth entry point in Antarctica, where Ghidorah was first frozen. Jia tells Kong that his house is via the front door, but he refuses to leave.
Ren Serizawa, the son of Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, is in charge of Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical Godzilla. As soon as Mechagodzilla is up and running, Walter sends in a massive adult Skullcrawler dubbed "Number 10" to see how well it can take on the titans. Mechagodzilla grips and restrains the Skullcrawler as it nears Madison, Josh, and Bernie, before cleaving it in two with a massive red energy beam. Mecha shuts down as a consequence of being limited by the power source.
It looks like Skull Island inside the Hollow Earth. They are walking through the countryside when they are attacked by a pair of Warbats. One of them destroys one of the HEAVs, but the other doesn't. When the first Warbat was killed, Kong swung its body into the second one, which knocked it out, but the creature came back and wrapped itself around him. This gives Kong a chance to get away from the Warbat. The creature is then hit with missiles from Nathan's team in their HEAV, giving Kong a chance to break free and beat the Warbat to death before eating its internal parts.
There, Godzilla makes his way into the heart of the city and sensing Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, drills a shaft to the ecosystem with his atomic breath, causing the temple to collapse. Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks while Maia and her team try to flee in their HEAV, only for Kong to grab it on their way out and, despite Maia attempting to shoot him in order to escape, he instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peeking inside to make sure that Jia, Ilene and Nathan aren't in there, killing Maia and her personnel inside.
Godzilla recovers and rises up as he hunts for Kong atop a skyscraper. Kong ambushes Godzilla from above and puts him in a chokehold with the intention of strangling him. Despite Kong's attempts to get Godzilla off of him by striking his damaged leg, Godzilla breaks free and unleashes his entire rage on him, dislocating his left arm, slicing him with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice. Godzilla roars angrily at Kong, his vanquished foe who is bound and pinned.
Mechagodzilla suddenly goes crazy under the influence of both the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks, unbeknownst to Walter as he is monologuing about his invention with his back turned, ending in the robot murdering Walter with a sweep of its hand and Ren being electrocuted to death. In this episode, Mechagodzilla, who has been possessed by Ghidorah's mind, escapes from the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and rampages over the city before coming face to face with Godzilla. Once it comes into touch with Godzilla, Mechagodzilla launches a volley of missiles at the monster's biological counterpart before the two engage in a pitched combat.
As Godzilla and Mechagodzilla duel, Josh and Bernie try to stop the renegade robot remotely, while Madison calls in Mark for help. Eventually, Godzilla takes the upper hand and scorches Mechagodzilla. Jia realizes that Kong's pulse is fading as Mechagodzilla continues to beat Godzilla as the three approach the unconscious Kong. Maia had previously said that the HEAVs were capable of powering Las Vegas for a week, so Nathan recalls that and sets the final HEAV to self-destruct, detonating the vessel and unleashing an enormous electrical charge that immediately revives Kong.
The two Titans work together to change the tide, but the robot proves to be stronger than their combined force and overpowers them. Kong reclaims his axe, which he had lost during his previous encounter with Godzilla, and strikes numerous blows on Mechagodzilla, but his weapon, having lost its charge, is worthless against the robot, which tries to mortally impale Kong with its tail drill. All seems to be lost for Kong and Godzilla until Bernie, understanding there is nothing he and the others can do, takes out a flask of booze and suggests they all have a drink. However, Josh pulls the flask from Bernie's grasp and short-circuits Mechagodzilla's controls by dumping the contents of the drink all over the control panel, causing Mechagodzilla to halt and allowing Godzilla and Kong to regroup and retake the upper hand.
After seeing Kong holding his axe, Godzilla charges it by blasting it with his atomic breath. This allows Kong to dismantle Mechagodzilla from head to toe and then sit down to relax after raising his trophy and letting out a great shout of victory.
After his unproduced script for the unmade 1994 feature, this is Terry Rossio's first Godzilla film.
Kyle Chandler has appeared in two King Kong films, the first of which being Peter Jackson's 2005 adaptation.
At 113 minutes, Godzilla vs. Kong is the MonsterVerse's shortest film.
Because of its pyramid-topped location and the fact that it is subterranean, the Central Dogma resembles Mechagodzilla's home base.
